The Malibu Optimist Club since 1960 has sponsored a speech competition called “Optimist Oratorical.”

This year’s four-minute, original speeches were prepared and presented by 10 young speakers on the theme, “Cyber Communication…Progress or Problem?”

The oratorical reception was held at Pepperdine University’s Raitt Recital Hall, which was attended by more than 50 teens, parents, Optimists and teachers.

Speakers earned certificates, medals and U.S. savings bonds for the first, second and third place positions.

Many of these speakers will be eligible to return again to the speech competition next year, as long as they are under 16 years of age. The first place speakers will be invited to speak in competition with orators from other Los Angeles area students and to earn other awards.
