Malibu City Councilman John Sibert has withdrawn his application for the California Coastal Commission. Sibert was one of three finalists under consideration for the seat vacated by former Santa Monica mayor Richard Bloom, who recently won election to the 50th Assembly District.

Sibert is out of town, but his wife, Blanca, left a message for The Malibu Times saying that he had withdrawn his application and was “no longer in the running.”

Two other nominees were under consideration: Azusa Mayor Pro Tem Angel Carrillo and Ranchos Palos Verdes City Councilman Jim Knight. The appointment will be made by the Senate Rules Committee.

The powerful commission has 12 voting members. The governor, Speaker of the Assembly and the Senate Rules Committee each appoint four members. There are also four non-voting members.
