A nearly 2-acre brush fire broke out Monday at 8:30 a.m. on Castro Peak above Malibu, Los Angeles County Fire authorities said.

It appears the fire started from the flying sparks of a grinding machine that was being used by construction workers to cut a steel rebar fence surrounding a transmission station atop the hill, according to Fire Battalion Chief Haskell of Fire Station 70 in Malibu.

The fire was knocked down at approximately 9:45 a.m., a spokesman said, and burned 1.9 acres total. It is not clear why workers were cutting through the steel fence.

Castro Peak is located east of Latigo Canyon Road and Kanan Dume Road and is listed on various websites as the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains.Â
