Advocates for Malibu Public Schools (AMPS) said it needs to raise $200,000 from donors to continue work towards creating a Malibu School District separate from Santa Monica.

So far, $86,000 of the required $200,000 has been raised, and AMPS said they encourage everyone to give something, no matter how little.

According to the AMPS Facebook page, they will be holding a fundraiser at the Malibu Lumber Yard on Aug. 27 from 12-3 p.m.

There will be “games, entertainment and shopping,” with a percentage of sales at participating stores will go toward AMPS. From 6:30-9:30 p.m., there will be a cocktail party and a dance to the end the night.

Tickets are $75 each and proceeds from ticket sales will go to AMPS.

In order to make the separation a reality, AMPS needs to “raise funds to pay for studies that outline the legal and financial details of separation.”

According to information from Roui Israel, the president of AMPS, “a negotiating team … is [outlining] the terms under which the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s Board of Education can grant Malibu independence,” but more money needs to be raised as soon as possible.
