California receives West Nile protection funding

The state will receive $441,974 in additional federal support for activities to protect the public from West Nile virus. Last week, a 60-year-old Los Angeles County woman became the 11th Californian to die from the virus.

The supplemental funding from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be used to support laboratory testing for West Nile and expand public health education activities, including increasing staff to handle calls to the West Nile toll-free hotline, enhancing the West Nile Web site and funding a public health educator to assist with additional outreach efforts.

Citizenship award nominations needed

The Parks & Recreation Commission is currently accepting nominations for the 2004 Jake Kuredjian Memorial Citizenship Award. The award is given to individuals who contribute to parks and recreation programs within the community. Recipients should have demonstrated an ongoing concern and involvement with some aspect of recreation in Malibu, have demonstrated the highest levels of citizenship and have made a lasting contribution to the community. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the city’s Web site at www.ci.malibu.ca.us. Nominations must be turned into the city by Nov. 1.

Book store opening

Although the store already opened earlier in the summer, Diesel, A Bookstore will hold a grand opening celebration on Sept. 18 and 19. A party will take place on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Author David Lynch will be there to sign his book, “Read ‘Em and Weep: My Favorite Novels.”

On Sept. 19 at 10:30 a.m., a selection of local luminaries will sign and discuss their books. At 11:30 a.m., there will be a celebration of the publication of “Swollen,” the first novel by Diesel bookseller Melissa Lion. At 12 p.m., there will be a panel discussion to talk about the various aspects of surf culture from fiction to photography, memoir to video. Novelist Kem Nunn, writer of the surf novel, “Tapping the Source,” will be presenting his latest novel, “Tijuana Straits.” At 1 p.m. a select group of contributors will read from and sign the anthology, “My California: Journeys by Great Writers.”
