Regardless of the pros and cons of the so-called Reiner Initiative, do we really want public policy being made by the rich and powerful? In a city as small as Malibu, money can go a long way in influencing the outcome of an election. Can there really be a fair and open debate on important issues if we allow big money to overwhelm the process?Â
Whether one-sided funding is coming from bottom line developers or Hollywood fat cats, it is equally worrisome. We live in a democracy — not an oligarchy — and the economic clout of a few should not set the agenda for the many.Â
