In the month since U.S. Congressman Henry Waxman announced that he will not be running for reelection in November 2014, the field of those bidding for his empty seat in the House of Representatives has become crowded with political hopefuls, according to a list released by the LA County Registrar.
No one from Malibu is vying for the position.
The list of possible candidates for the vacant seat, which includes lawyers, businesspeople and entertainers, amongst other professionals, grew to 21 before the filing deadline on the evening of Wednesday, March 12, according to an article by the LA Times.
The 33rd Congressional District, which Waxman has represented for 40 years, includes Malibu, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and other surrounding cities. Several cities are represented in the pool of prospective candidates, including Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Sherman Oaks and Beverly Hills.Â
The forms submitted by potential candidates will go under review by the California Secretary of State to determine which hopefuls are eligible to run for the vacant office. By the time of the fall election in November, the pool of candidates will have been narrowed down to two, with a primary scheduled for June 3.
