In a crucial step toward making a local beach properly accessible, the Malibu Planning Commission on Monday will consider approving a permit for Los Angeles County officials to break ground on the Dan Blocker Beach Access Improvement Project.
City staff is recommending the commission OK a coastal development permit for the county after the project spent years wending its way through the bureaucratic system. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky estimates the project could get under way as early as April if proper permitting is obtained.
Currently, the one-mile stretch of shoreline is encumbered by tattered fencing and overgrown dry brush along a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Corral Canyon.
Blueprints for the Dan Blocker Beach Access Improvement Project include plans for 14 parking spaces with 90-minute metered parking, one ADA-compliant parking space, a 242-square-foot public restroom, concrete picnic tables, three public viewing areas and concrete benches.
