Longtime Malibu resident Beryl Barone died on May 13 at St. John’s Hospital.

Barone, who moved to Point Dume in 1968, was born in London on Feb. 26, 1919. A former nurse and ambulance driver during World War II, she immigrated to the United States in 1948 and became a citizen in 1955.

During her early years in Malibu, Barone worked in the fashion industry coordinating major shows and training models for the runways of Los Angeles, New York and Europe.

Following her retirement, Barone became an active volunteer in the community, working as a docent for the Malibu Lagoon Museum and with the Malibu Garden Club. She loved gardening and spent many of her final days tilling her own English-style garden. She will be dearly missed by family as well as many devoted friends.

Barone is survived by her daughter Hilary, son Paul Sunderland, his wife, Maud-Ann Sunderland, and grandchildren Erica, Natasha and Leif.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Malibu Garden Club, 5792 Calpine Dr., Malibu, CA 90265.
