At the Monday, June 12 Malibu City Council meeting, council voted to allocate $2,000 out of the city’s general fund undesignated reserve toward Beach Day, an event coordinated by Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon and Senator Henry Stern to bring children from multiple Boys and Girls Clubs to Malibu to learn how to surf.

“Many of the children have never even seen the ocean,” the city’s staff report claimed.

During discussion of the item, surf therapy group Mighty UnderDogs Founder Tim Hazelip offered help and support for the program, while urging council to allocate more money — “maybe a thousand dollars more.”

Hazelip mentioned his experience hosting beach events for inner-city kids, adding, “with my experience, [$2,000] is simply not enough.”

At this, Malibu developer Norm Haynie volunteered an additional $2,000 toward the event.

“I’ll donate the additional $2,000 the gentleman needs to provide the services, and I’ll do that tonight,” Haynie pledged.

The Beach Day is set to take place on Sunday, June 25.
