Malibu resident Taro Watanabe won the Surfing America Prime event in the Boys U14 category, beating out competitors from Orange County through Ventura. The invitational amateur surf event took place Jan. 10-11 at Streamer Lane in Santa Cruz. Watanabe is a 12-year-old seventh grader at Viewpoint School.
