The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) Board on Wednesday, May 4 voted 4-0 to adopt a neutral position on the plan by U2 guitarist The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, and his partners to build private homes in the Sweetwater Mesa area of unincorporated Malibu when it goes for approval before the California Coastal Commission. The board also endorsed a public benefits program offered in exchange by Evans and his partners that includes $1 million for trail land acquisitions, trail dedications across the property, and deed restrictions. The MRCA is a local government agency that partners with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, which last week withdrew its opposition to the project in exchange for the benefits program.
