Representative Tripp Principe from the Harry Barovsky Youth Commission on Monday announced upcoming commission events, including the annual Haunted Maze and Movie Night, the first Malibu Teen Film Festival and the 9th annual Battle of the Bands.

The haunted maze is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Oct. 17, at Malibu Bluffs Park and is a charity event with proceeds going to Mending Kids International.

“Students who bring a donation [of a toothbrush or toothpaste] will get into the haunted house maze for free,” Principe told the Malibu City Council.

“A brand new event,” according to Principe, is the teen film festival, which is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2015, at the Malibu Pacific Theater.

Students who wish to submit a film must be from grades 6-12 and submissions are due by Dec. 8.

The event, the first of its kind in Malibu, is preceded by two workshops on filmmaking for teens offered by the city: the first workshop is on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. According to the City of Malibu’s website, “students will learn about film directing, cinematography, screen writing, editing and producing,” at the workshop.

The second workshop will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 4. Classes are free to attend and open to middle school and high school students.

The Battle of the Bands will take place in Spring 2015, with no date announced as of Sept. 22.
