Sonar, Sound Navigation and Ranging, was developed by the British in the 1920s for U-Boat detection and has been the underwater eyes of mariners worldwide ever since.
It’s used to measure water depth and locate schools of fish. Sonar equipped freighters, tankers, yachts and cruise ships can avoid submerged objects in their paths. Too bad the Titanic wasn’t equipped. Submariners use sonar for undersea navigation and war fighting. Telling submariner’s to turn off their sonar when whales are present is like telling motorists to shut their eyes when pedestrians are present. Sonar is used by submariner’s for collision avoidance. Turning off their sonar and blinding the sub is a good recipe for chopped blubber. I’m sure that the dream team that thought this one up will bye telling pilots to turn off their radar whenever birds are present.
