Malibu’s first neighborhood to be named a Firewise Community is the Big Rock Mesa Property Owners Association, which achieved the status as “a great example of how neighborhoods can self-organize to protect against wildfire and increase their resilience,” after completing a community risk assessment, developing neighborhood wildfire plans, completed brush clearance around the neighborhood perimeter and creating street teams with a buddy system. The recognition makes Big Rock Mesa only the second community in Los Angeles County to be named a Firewise Community, according to the City of Malibu.
