City officials held a second informal meeting Tuesday of an ad hoc committee to consider ideas for the purchase and retirement of vacant property in the Civic Center. One idea drew heavy interest among the rest: Community member Dennis Torres’s idea for a cemetery in the Civic Center.
Torres said cemeteries, especially in valuable areas such as Malibu, are very profitable and he knows many Malibu residents would want to stay in Malibu once they pass away.Â
Committee members also remain interested in trying to build other community-serving areas in the Civic Center, be it a skate park, a cultural facility or a permanent site for an urgent care center in Malibu.Â
Approximately 20 people attended the meeting, a severe decrease in attendance since the first meeting when 50 people attended.
Mayor Laura Rosenthal attributed the drop in attendance to many committee members being on vacation this week.Â
The group will meet again on Sept. 11, during which Rosenthal and Councilwoman Joan House expect more thorough research to be presented from seven volunteer subcommittees.
