A Malibu resident is crowned a local hero by neighbors after catching alleged mail bandits redhanded, according to unconfirmed reports shared on social media. According to Big Rock residents, the community had been the target of mail theft for months before the local took action the night of Jan. 17.

In a Big Rock community NextDoor posting shared with The Malibu Times, the resident announced that a late-model, two door Mercedes suspiciously stopped in front of his neighbor’s mailbox at 12:50 a.m. Suspecting that the occupants were stealing mail, the man then blocked off the residential street with his vehicle — preventing the alleged thieves from escaping — and waited until the sheriff’s department arrived. It was said that sheriff’s deputies found all of the evidence needed in the Mercedes to detain the career criminals.

The resident was not harmed, but noted in the posting that the sheriff’s officials advised that neither he, nor any other citizen, take this type of extreme action in the future out of a concern for safety.

The Malibu Times reached out to the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station to confirm the accounts, but no update was given before the paper went to print.
