The Ventura County Tree Mitigation Fund has granted $94,469 to plant 5,000 new native plants, including 2,000 trees and 3,000 understory plants, at Rancho Sierra Vista in the Newbury Park area, the National Park Service (NPS) announced Monday.
The grant went to Mountains Restoration Trust (MRT), an adjunct of the State Coastal Conservancy, that has pledged to work closely with the NPS to complete the 24-acre project.
“We are pleased to work on this restoration project, doing what we do so well, which is growing and planting native plants,” Betsey Scheets, the project manager for MRT, said in a statement provided by the NPS. “We are also looking forward to meeting and working with new volunteers in Ventura County as we expand our restoration work into the western portion of the Santa Monica Mountains.”
Members of the public are invited to volunteer, either for a few hours at a time or on a long-term basis. The project is expected to be monitored and maintained over a 10-year period.
Details for prospective volunteers can be found at volunteermatch.org.
