Bret Schreiber, 66, died August 2 in West Virginia.
He spent his teenage and college years living at the home of his parents, Dick and Toby Schreiber, on Point Dume. After graduating from Santa Monica High School, Schreiber attended UC Santa Barbara, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in three fields. He spent more than three years skippering a 72-foot sailboat in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean waters.
Schreiber married Julia Kaaz and they lived in Santa Barbara for a few years while starting their family. He worked for 3M and the family moved to West Virginia when a branch of the company relocated there. That branch became a world leader in intra-optical replacements.
“Bret was a lifetime advocate of outdoor life and staying in shape,” a loved one shared. He once swam the 18-mile length of Priest Lake in Idaho. He ran his last marathon at age 60, the same year he earned a master’s degree in engineering from Marshall University in West Virginia.
He is survived by his parents; wife of 35 years, Julia; their four children, Mark, Cindy Hughart, Thomas and Katie; three sisters, Heidi Rogers, Wendy Bradley and Polly.
A funeral took place in Huntington, W.Va.
