Laura Numeroff, author of “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” visited Point Dume Marine Science School March 2 in celebration of Read Across America day, where she met with students in small groups, read to them and spoke about creating stories and the process of writing.

Numeroff shared her experience of coming up with the idea for her first book while on a road trip.

“On the way from San Francisco to Oregon in the car, I tried to make my friend laugh by telling a story about a mouse nibbling on a cookie,” Numeroff said. “He’d want some milk to go with it. And then he’d probably need a straw. Then he’d want a napkin… and by the time we reached Oregon, I had told the whole story!”

Numeroff has published 37 books, including best-selling titles such as “If You Give a Pig a Pancake,” “If You Take a Mouse to School” and “Chimps Don’t Wear Glasses.”
