Elizabeth Gilbert, author of "Eat, Pray, Love," signs books after speaking at the Malibu Civic Theatre.

Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of “Eat, Pray, Love,” came to the Malibu Civic Theatre Sunday night to close out the inaugural Malibu Library Speaker Series.

She took to the stage to share another intimate side of her life: her writing process, from the moment a spark of inspiration takes hold to when a book is finished. She explained the journey behind her upcoming novel, “The Signature of All Things,” her first work of fiction in 12 years.

Her compelling writing translated into captivating speaking that kept the audience waiting with bated breath to finally learn how a novel about building highways in the Amazon rainforest evolved into one about a family of seafaring botanists in a story full of uncanny coincidences worthy of their own memoir. The coincidences continued Sunday night when two sisters sitting in the audience made a surprising connection between “The Signature of All Things” and their own lives.
