Detrimental to schools

While our local communities of Malibu and Santa Monica have helped avert total fiscal disaster in the past, with regard to school funding, it is the State of California that has accepted the ultimate responsibility for this vital aspect of our society. Every one of us, whether we have children in public school or not, depends on the citizenry that is produced by our system of education.

That is why I am asking you to vote “no” on Proposition 76. It would lead to a permanent loss to our schools, every year, of $4 billion already owed. At $600 per child, this kind of money cannot, and should not, be made up for by local fundraising! Proposition 76 would fundamentally change the minimum funding guarantee passed by voters under Proposition 98 It would permanently give any California governor unprecedented powers to override state laws with no public oversight. Proposition 76 is opposed by state and local levels of the PTA, the cities of Malibu and Santa Monica, the League of Women Voters, the California Congress of Seniors, and the Santa Monica-Malibu Teachers Association.

Our children deserve better! We all deserve better.
