Mentors from the Successful Education Achievement Program work with local students to encourage academic success.

Mentors involved with the Successful Educational Achievement (SEA) Program have begun to work with students at both Malibu High and Middle Schools. The program is typically only offered to middle school-aged students, but due to the unique situation of having MHS and MMS located at the same campus, program providers have decided to make an exception.

The nonprofit program was designed to honor the life of the late Emily Shane by helping students who may have faced some of the same challenges Emily did when she was a student. Though SEA helps students with homework and school projects, it has been designed to be more than a tutor program; mentors work with students in order to encourage academic success, but also to teach the benefits of “paying it forward.” Each session, students must reflect about a good deed they performed at some point during the week, no matter how big or small the deed was.

The program is currently available at MHS and MMS, two schools in both Oxnard and Santa Monica, with plans to expand to additional sites, including South LA.
