The Dume – Doom – Doomay tempest.
In docent training for the Adamson House I learned that English explorer Captain George Vancouver named Pt. Dume in honor of his friend Father Dumetz, who was a priest at Mission San Buenaventura (Ventura). Vancouver’s cartographer spelled the name wrong on the map. Whether he ran out of ink, was distracted, couldn’t spell, spelled it as it was pronounced or had had too many nips of His Majesty’s navy grog, I don’t know. There is a letter on display at the museum explaining the naming.
The correct name of the Point should be Dumetz, pronounced doomETZ or doomAY. But Dume, pronounced doom, is much more colorful.
