Two brushfires knocked down in Malibu

3:07 p.m. update: Two separate 1.5-acre brushfires that appeared to begin almost simultaneously Saturday afternoon in Malibu have been knocked down, causing no damage to structures or injuries to people according to city safety officials. 

The fire at 3210 Encinal Canyon Road, between Juma Ranch and Rancho Malibu Road, began shortly around 1 p.m. Saturday and burned about 1.5 acres before firefighters achieved knockdown at approximately 2:43 p.m., according to Donna Gilbert of the City of Malibu’s emergency service’s team. A second fire at 29500 Heathercliff Road burned about 1.5 acres of brush before it was knocked down at approximately 3 p.m., Gilbert said. 

No injuries or damage to structures were reported, Gilbert said. What sparked the fires is unclear, she said. 

“They’re looking into the cause and will let us know,” Gilbert said. 


 

2:49 update: The location of the two brushfires are 29500 Heathercliff Road and 3210 Encinal Canyon Road between Juma Ranch and Rancho Malibu Road, according to a fire official. 

The Encinal fire is approximately one acre, and firefighters responded to it at 1:12 p.m., according to Amy Gutierrez of the Camp Malibu station at 1250 South Encinal Road. 


 2:26 update: City of Malibu Emergency Services Coordinator Brad Davis said in a telephone interview “my level of confidence is pretty high that [the two fires are] gonna get knocked down. But I’m going to be monitoring the situation.”


Two separate brushfires are burning on Heathercliff Road and Encinal Canyon Road, according to a City of Malibu Emergency Services message sent at 2:10 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The message stated there was “no apparent cause for alarm at this point.” Calls to Fire Station 70 were not returned. Check back for more information as it becomes available.
