Ode to Malibu

The sweet smell of the sea in the distance and hot dogs and hamburgers sizzling on the grill let everyone know that this is the place to be to relax. People line up outside the door into the parking lot waiting for a taste of Paradise. I sit under a shady tree watching couples holding hands, parents playing with their children and friends catching up with one another. Looking over to my left, I notice how contrasts abound here. The homeless man walking toward me, carrying his life on his back, while crossing paths with the man standing by his double-parked Ferrari checking his voice mail.

The people who frequent this tranquil beachside community range from the surfers looking for the perfect wave to the bikers out for a scenic ride. As well as local professionals and visitors to the people trying to blend in and the many store clerks who carry a ready smile for all. And don’t forget the celebrities who come and go as well.

A lot has changed since the days May Rindge roamed on horseback guarding her Rancho Malibu home from all comers. Back then not many explored this area whereas today everyone from the picture perfect sun worshipper to the bodybuilders catching up on their reading between sips of cold frappuccino at the local Starbucks make their way here to enjoy this sun-drenched piece of Southern California.
