The power pole replacement project in Malibu Canyon is winding down for the summer ….

Parking at Nobu and the Pier go up for discussion next week.

And the San Onofre nuclear waste issue  …. comes to Malibu in August. This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  Friday  ))) edition … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Malibu!

——

It’s June … and that means a temporary end to the pole replacement project in Malibu Canyon.

Southern California Edison is  in the midst of a 4 million dollar plus project … to replace the wooden power poles in Malibu Canyon with steel ones.

The poles are overloaded … in many cases … and have caused several fires … including the 500 million dollar Canyon Fire of 2007.

They are being replaced under an agreement with the state … part of the 67 million dollars in fines and sanctions charged to the power company … and wireless companies …. charged to them because of the fire.

The 66 kilovolt power lines in Malibu Canyon are one of two routes used to deliver electricity by Edison to the Malibu coast.

Since more power is used in the summertime … the Edison company says they don’t want to risk it.

Yesterday’s brownout at 6:03 in the morning is the type of problem that can occur … when high voltages are switched to different circuits.

We should add that we do not have official word on what happened yesterday … when voltage dropped from 110 to 76 volts for several seconds on circuits in western Malibu.

In the canyon … Edison crews will wrap up work next week … before resuming in the fall.

Wireless companies may be working … however .. later this month.

——

Three major issues go before the Malibu Planning Commission next week.

A parking crackdown on commercial vehicles at the Malibu Pier.

The inability of Nobu to do business while obeying its city permit … resulting in traffic jams and a stuffed parking lot.

And … final plans for the Malibu Cemetery come up for a vote.

The final plan calls for elimination of a concrete wall along PCH .. to make room for a proper turn lane and bike lane heading up the hill towards Pepperdine.

The developer plans to taper back the hillside … to eliminate the need for a high wall.

Next Wednesday … the city of Malibu may finally take steps to protect Malibu’s dark skies.

Newcomers may be surprised to learn …. that floodlights illimunating stucco or palm trees are not really welcome here.

In fact … they;re already illegal in many cases.

But at mansion after mansion …. Malibu longtimers are dismayed to see new floodlights pointing skyward … causing a skyglow that wrecks one of Malibu’s greatest attributes.

A combination of the mountains and weather conditions often leads to jet black skies over Malibu …. blacker than possible in the deserts of Nevada..

Nights lije that are increasingly rare … as locals are lighting the sky with year round christmas tree lights on trees …. and floodlights pointing up at trees.

Next Tuesday … the city is getting hosting a public tour ….  part of the development of its proposed Dark Sky Ordinance.

Next Tuesday … a lighting engineer … and an expert from the International Dark-Sky Association . will take the city council and interested residents on a tour Tuesday June 6th.

The next night … Wednesday … there will be a workshop to review of a draft Dark Skies Ordinance.

There’s more information at the city’s web site …. we’ll have it on the KBU Newswire and the KBU Facebook page.

Well, you could see this one coming a mile away … or rather … from 21 miles away.

Malibu and Caltrans have proposed eliminating 625 parking spaces.

Rich people on Malibu’s beaches are trying to restrict public access.

The Hollywood Reporter has done a story on the P C H  parking changes ….and the Hollywood Reporter got it wrong.

The Reporter quotes the MRCA — the Moutnain Resource Conservation Agency — as saying the plan would eliminate parking along Carbon Beach …. aslo known s Billionaires Beach.

Actually …. they study does not recommend that.

It recommends eliminating a mere handful of parking spaces … about two dozen … that are illegal under state law.

The vast majority of the 625 parking spaces are on the west side of town … from Zuma Beach west … where the highway stretches to the county line.

Very few beach users park along that stretch of highway … except at the four state beaches west of Trancas.

That;s where people have been killed crossing the road … and the study recommends a ban on parking on the land side of the highway … while state parks is working to increase parking in its lots on the ocean side of the highway.

The Hollywood Reporters does indicate however … that the city has work to do … showing the Coastal Commission and MRCA that parking on PCH can be deadly … and that safety and not crowd reduction is the intent here.

——

Malibu residents are used to trekking hundred of miles to attend Coastal Commission meetings.

This month’s meeting is in Arcata ….at Humboldt State University.

That’s 800 miles up the coast.

But …. the commission is heading to Malibu.

It’s August meeting … will be held almost in Malibu.

At Pepperdine University.

Should be a big crowd … as the Coastal Commission supposedly will reopen the San Onofre nuclear waste dump issue.

The California Coastal Commission has reopened its 2015 permit that allows Southern California Edison to bury millions of pounds of nuclear waste along the San Diego County coast.

The agenda item, previously scheduled for the July commission meeting near Monterey, has been pushed back to the August meeting in Malibu so more residents of San Diego and Orange counties will be able to attend.
