Gilbert B. Lowry, who lived and surfed in Point Dume for many years, died Jan. 31 after a long bout with throat cancer. He was 62.

Lowry was born in Winnipeg, Canada on April 10, 1942. He moved to Santa Monica with his parents, Esther and Henry Lowry, in 1951. The family moved to Malibu when the Lowrys built a house in Point Dume in 1955.

Lowry graduated from Santa Monica High School, where he was active in school politics. He later attended Santa Monica College and graduated from San Jose State University. Lowry served in the Naval Reserves for two years, including a tour of duty in Asia. He was an avid surfer and frequently surfed in Point Dume with a group of friends. Although Lowry eventually relocated to Ojai, he returned often to surf the local Malibu spots.

Lowry established his own business as a tax accounting specialist and was a past president of the Ojai Rotary Club. He is survived by his mother, Esther Lowry, of Malibu, his wife Connie, children Jennifer and Josh, four grandchildren and two foster sisters, Mary and Ruth.

A date for a memorial service is pending.
