An LASD deputy questions a driver at a DUI checkpoint in 2013.

The DUI checkpoint set up by the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station on Aug. 19 between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. netted four arrests from the 851 vehicles scanned.

One suspect was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, one suspect was arrested for other criminal charges, and two drivers were cited and arrested for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license.

DUI checkpoints are intended to deter drunk driving. The sheriff’s department intends to remind the public that drunk driving can be avoided through simple planning. Designated sober drivers, taxis or utilizing services like Uber and Lyft are all it takes to avoid driving under the influence.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has said DUI checkpoints are the most effective form of enforcement against driving under the influence.

The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station will conduct additional checkpoints in the future. The dates and times of those checkpoints have not been disclosed.
