Documentary featuring school superintendent wins award

“First to Worst,” the PBS documentary that features Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy has received the CINE Golden Eagle award in he category of Investigative News. The film chronicles the rise and fall of California’s public school system.

Mountainous recreation areas closed

National Park Service sites throughout the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area are closed for a short period. According to the NPS, the recent storms have eroded trails and flooded streams over their banks. The NPS advises the public to call the center and verify whether a site is open or closed. 805.370.2301

Local in radio play

“The Play’s the Thing,” a radio drama program on 89.3 KPCC FM will air “The Third Man” by Graham Greene on Jan. 29. The play features Malibu resident Kelsey Grammer and deals with post-World War II Vienna, where “the third man” has witnessed a murder. The police don’t care to investigate, but novelist Holly Martins is haunted by the death of his friend, and his search for the killer makes for electrifying drama. The broadcast includes an interview with Time film critic Richard Schickel.
