A memorial Mass will take place for Sister Mary Campbell on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church. The church is located at 3625 Winter Canyon Road.
Sister Mary died in a one-car collision on Wednesday afternoon on Mulholland Drive near Las Virgenes Canyon Road. She was 75.
Monsignor John Sheridan and Pepperdine University law professor Doug Kmiec, who is serving as U.S. ambassador to Malta, were also in the vehicle. They were injured and are in the hospital.
As of Thursday afternoon, Monsignor Sheridan was reported to be in critical, but stable, condition. Kmiec was in stable condition, and is expected to be released from the hospital in a week to 10 days.
Sister Mary came to Our Lady of Malibu in 1983. She served as a principal and teacher at the school. In recent years, she had devoted her life to taking care of Monsignor Sheridan, said Sister Brid Long, the regional director of the Sisters of St. Louis and a friend and colleague of Sister Mary since 1966.
“Wherever he went she went,” Sister Brid said. “She was very devoted to the much beloved pastor.”
Sister Mary was well-respected and popular in Malibu. Sister Brid credited this to her “sense of simplicity, joy and faith.”
“She was very artistic, ” Sister Brid said. “She did a lot of calligraphy. She was a very good teacher. People would describe her as having a happy public personality and endless energy.”
Sister Mary is survived by her sisters, Noreen, Nancy, Peggy and Sister Zelie and brothers, Jimmy Frank, Ray, Paddy and Noel. Funeral plans are being finalized.
