The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) announced it is seeking volunteers to help repair burned trails throughout Zuma Canyon on Wednesday, March 20, from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Loose soil not being held by plant roots has covered many trails and “recent heavy rains damaged many sections.”
Volunteers will be working with National Park Service rangers to repair the trails using hand tools.
“Our work will redefine and reshape hiking trails so that the public may once again enjoy the canyon,” NPS wrote. “This work not only improves public access and safety, but it also protects recovering vegetation by clearly defining trail boundaries.”
The event is open to a maximum of 30 volunteers, who should be prepared to walk one to two miles carrying a personal backpack and a tool. They should wear shoes or boots (closed toe only), pants and a long-sleeved shirt. In addition, NPS suggests bringing a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, gloves (if you have them), hat and snacks.

Volunteers will meet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead Parking Lot located at the very end of Bonsall Drive in Malibu. For more information, contact Tara Hallman of the Santa Monica Mountains Fund at 530.307.8337.
