Adele Reed Porter died on Oct. 19. She was 85.

A Malibu resident since 1956, she was known as a loving mother, grandmother and friend, a talented artist, calligrapher and cook, a crossword puzzle master and Scrabble legend, a genius at Hearts, a feisty tennis player and the best oatmeal cookie chef in town.

She was also a powerful force in the community, helping found St. Aidan’s School and sponsoring the Keep Christ in Christmas Project.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Cal Porter; brother, Walter Reed and family; sister-in-law, Lydia Reed; cousin, Lowie Graves and family; children and their spouses Nancy Wynn, Cathy Carter, Peter Carter, Lon and DeeDee Porter, Cathy Ann and Neil Fisher, Nancy and Guy Russell; grand-children Scott, Kelly, Harben, Julie, Oliver, Tanner and Little Cal; her many friends who she considered her extended family; and all the children who thought of her as their grandmother and knew the cookie jar was always full.

There will be a gathering on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on the bluff at Paradise Cove for family, close friends and neighbors. A celebration honoring Adele’s life will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Paradise Cove Recreation Hall.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, Adele would appreciate it if everyone baked cookies for their children.
