Children with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s Head Start program receive crayons from the Crayon Collection.

Children’s crayons will no longer go to waste at Denny’s restaurants thanks to the chain’s recent partnership with Malibu-based charity Crayon Collection.

Restaurants throw away over 150 million crayons each year because they do not have recycling or reuse policies, according to a press release from Denny’s. Founded by Malibu resident Sheila Michail Morovati, Crayon Collection is an international charity initiative that collects gently used crayons from restaurant partners and relocates them to schools in need. The charity’s mission involves helping provide art education, as well as raising awareness of recycling, reducing and reusing waste.

Participating Denny’s locations will be paired with a local Head Start center, which will send representatives to the restaurants to pick up and redistribute used crayons on a monthly basis.

“We believe that with the participation of Denny’s the Crayon Collection program will be adopted in kid-friendly restaurants everywhere,” Morovati said in a press release by Denny’s. “We appreciate the extra work that Denny’s team members have taken on in this socially and eco-responsible initiative.”
