Stop him if you can

It is said that the secret of staying young in politics is to be honest, eat slowly and lie about your age. Have you noticed by viewing the new City of Malibu-run TV channel, how the members of the Malibu City Council have declined with age and disquietude. It is no wonder that Malibuite Sherman Baylin is having misfortune with members of the City Council. Sherman has failed to position the legal signage declaring that “Sherman’s Place has the right to refuse service to current and former mayors of the City of Malibu” in a place where all may view it. I recollect as a youngster my father relating a tale about a mayor. Stop me if you have heard the fable before.

A pastor went to his church office on Monday morning and discovered a dead donkey in the churchyard. He called the local sheriff, but since there did not appear to be any foul play, the sheriff referred the preacher to the city Health Department. The Health Department said that since there was no health threat, the evangelist should call the city Sanitation Department. The manager there said he could not pick up the donkey without authorization from the city Mayor.

Now as I recall my father’s yarn, the evangelist personally knew the mayor and was not too eager to telephone him. The mayor had a menacing disposition and was generally hard to deal with, but the evangelist called him anyway. The mayor was in undistorted form. He immediately began to rant and rave at the evangelist and finally said, “Why did you call me, anyway? Isn’t it your vocation to bury the dead?” The preacher paused for a brief prayer and asked a higher power to direct his response. The evangelist was lead to respectfully answer, “Yes, mayor, it is my job to bury the dead, but I always like to notify the next of kin first!”

    Now isn’t that the truth.
