I’d like to thank Laura Rosenthal for confirming my worst fears about Proposition BB. In attempting to justify BB, she cites the alleged benefits Malibu has gotten from the two bond measures, EE and X. Clearly, this argument will be used to justify an endless stream of bond measures until the enemies of Proposition 13 finally succeed in their stealth campaign to whittle away that vital landmark in property rights protection.
Ms. Rosenthal and her allies need to understand we are not opposed to schools. We’re opposed to higher property taxes that become harder and harder to afford with each incremental increase. A few hundred dollars this year, a few hundred dollars next, a few hundred more the year after. Pretty soon we are taxing retired and working people out of their homes. Is this what you want? Is this the diversity you cherish in our schools? A student body of nothing but the spoiled children of rich people? At this rate that’s exactly what you’re going to get.
