Positively Postal

This letter responds to the article in your Letter to the Editor section written by Marlin Lyzun, which asks, “Do mail trucks offend?” (The Malibu Times, November 6, 2003).

Mail trucks do not offend, however, the 30 employees who work at the Malibu Post Office located at 23648 Pacific Coast Highway have every right to be offended when reading the erroneous musings of Lyzun. Rather than take offense, however, we’ve decided to set Lyzun straight.

Had the writer taken the time to ask, rather than guess, they would have found that we have our postal vehicles washed by a contractor every two weeks, not every week, as was stated in the letter.

Lyzun guesses that the water from washed vehicles drains into the Malibu Lagoon. Wrong again. The water from washed postal vehicles is diverted to a local, onsite sanitary sewer, which is the proper place for such waste water disposal.

So, Lyzun is wrong again saying, “…they are weekly contributors to the dirty discharge entering the lagoon.”

The Postal Service is committed to being a good environmental neighbor in every community that we serve. We have developed comprehensive environmental programs nationally that focus on recycling, pollution prevention, waste reduction, energy savings and transportation efficiency.

Furthermore, the Postal Service wants to do more than comply with local policy, we are committed to environmental leadership and compliance.

Mary Jane Smith
