Overwhelming tribute

I have been asked to express the gratitude to the over 200 members of the Malibu community that responded to our plea for assistance to the family of Gail Smith in this time of grief and tragedy. As of this writing, over $25,000 has been donated with money still coming in. More than the money, I have been impressed by the many who took the time to write cards and letters, expressing their personal remembrances of this very special lady who made such a profound impact on so many in the community.

About ten days ago, at a memorial service here in Malibu attended by over 250 people on a Saturday evening, over 25 people got up to express their thoughts but, unfortunately, Gail’s daughter, Denise Clark, was unable to hear firsthand the outpouring of love and affection. Now, with the many letters, all of which have been turned over to her, she will have a constant reminder of what her mother meant to so many here in the Malibu community.

I have been in daily contact with various members of the family, including Gail’s daughter, who is home and making good progress. Her injuries were quite serious and required surgery, but the doctors feel that she will make a full recovery-though unable to work for an indefinite period of time. Of equal concern is Denise’s five-year-old daughter, one of Gail’s two grandchildren, who witnessed first hand this horrible tragedy. Only time will tell the extent of the emotional scars both Denise and Brianna will have to endure.

Having attended the memorial service and having read all the tributes, both in writing and in conversations with numerous members of the community, it is very clear that Gail was revered and respected by all. If there is a common thread through all I have heard or read, it is that she made everyone feel special, and every encounter with her brightened that person’s day. Malibu has many cleaners, but there was only one Gail, and I heard over and over that the reason they chose Ogden’s was solely because of her. What better tribute to this kind, beautiful and gracious woman? Perhaps we all can learn a little from Gail’s example. Thank you, Malibu, for your generosity and outpouring of love, which I view as a giant “thank you” to Gail for all that she did for so many of us for so many years.
