Making an egg-cellent first impression with first bites

Popular Westlake Village eatery The Royal Egg Cafe expands to Malibu, garnering rave reviews

The golden rule in Malibu’s commercial sector is to make a good first impression when opening a new business in our community, a wise standard that particularly applies to restaurants. Malibu has a lot of food connoisseurs who have taken to local social media sites and Yelp to praise Malibu’s latest wellness-focused eatery specializing in breakfast and lunch. Nestled amongst the businesses in Point Dume Plaza, The Royal Egg Cafe opened on June 15, with some customers who have patronized the eatery’s Westlake Village flagship location expressing delight because they no longer have to drive over the Santa Monica Mountains to enjoy the made-from-scratch, organic, seed oil-free cuisine.

“This restaurant is the real deal because its menu is 100% organic, seed oil-free, and they have a scratch kitchen,” said local farmer Kerry Clasby, an organic food sourcing expert, founder of the Intuitive Forager and manager at The Malibu Fig Ranch at Sterling Farms located at Heathercliff and Pacific Coast Highway.  Clasby, who is one of Malibu’s most respected go-to sources for advice concerning all things epicurean, exuberantly made her laudatory comments betweensavoring tasty bites of deliciously prepared grass-fed wagyu skirt steak topped with harissa chimichurri and eggsaccompanied by tallow breakfast potatoes. “The Royal Egg uses high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, including range-free eggs and grass fed/pasture-raised ingredients,” Clasby said. “The fact that this restaurant has no seed oils is a very big deal because seed oils are highly oxidative and go rancid quickly, which is why manufacturers try to extend their shelf life by hydrogenating them.”

The something-for-everyone menu impresses and entices

Not a steak eater? No problem! The Royal Egg’s other signature breakfast dishes include The Malibu Ranch Hand, featuring wild boar sausage, eggs, black beans, and turmeric rice; The Patriot, featuring two organic, pasture-raised eggs, tallow potatoes, organic applewood-smoked bacon or chicken apple sausage, a cheddar jalapeno biscuit or nine-grain toast served with stellar housemade jam, a menu item that includes an organic cup of coffee or tea. Another fan favorite: the Crispy Mary’s Chicken Brunch sandwich, served on a brioche bun, made with organic eggs and house-pickled Fresno chile, herb aioli, and wild baby arugula accompanied by an organic kale, shaved fennel, and lemon salad.

Popular bowls include the Keto Bowl showcasing the kitchen’s crispy pork belly, a poached organic egg, avocado, and kale over Spanish-style cauliflower “rice,” all topped with harissa chimichurri and fresh lime.  Mushroom aficionados may wish to try the Royal Harvest Bowl featuring both wild rice and organic turmeric basmati rice, quinoa, kale, basil, and yams topped with organic poached eggs, feta and almond romesco, and avocado.

The kids’ menu is straightforward and fun, featuring a kids Ricotta Huckleberry Pancake with organic berries and maple syrup, or a kids-sized French Toast as well as an organic scrambled egg selection with organic bacon and plain potatoes. The Royal Egg also offers cuisine for those with various dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, keto, paleo, and gluten-free choices. Those adhering to a vegetarian diet may wish to order the berry oatmeal porridge which is full of organic house-made superfood granola with pepitas, toasted almonds, coconut oil, quinoa, flax hemp and chia seeds, A2 grass-fed yogurt, seasonal berries, local raw honey and Medjool dates. Another vegetarian and gluten-free choice is the keto quiche made with an almond flour deep-dish crust, goat cheese, broccolini, sun-dried tomatoes, and caramelized onions in a balsamic reduction.

But wait! There’s more — save room for the sweets!

The establishment’s menu also features lemon ricotta pancakes, as well as artisan pastries such as the popular cinnamon rolls and tasty toasts. Make sure to ask about the various baked specialties being featured when you arrive. Very importantly, those sampling the venue’s delicious specialty organic, fair-trade coffees, and the espressos, teas, and fresh juices give those beverages a hearty thumbs-up. Unique menu items jump out at those viewing the beverage menu, enticing them to try the unique dirty turmeric golden latte, the bourbon-maple latte, or sparkling rhubarb lemonade. How fun!

How it all started

“Our story began with an incredible love and appreciation for good food and, of course, the love of cooking and baking.” cafe founders Jaron and Bree Gugliuzza explain. “We have a special place in our hearts for breakfast, and our ambition is to share our gourmet, innovative, and cutting-edge food with you, with the hope that you will fall for breakfast in the same way that we have ... enjoying it at any time of the day.”

The founders note that the Royal Egg Cafe is a family-owned and operated establishment and that the venue, “is an extension of who we are and through our highest quality ingredients, irresistible taste, beautiful presentation, and genuine customer servers, we hope you will experience food in a whole new way!”
