Firefighters halt Kanan Fire in foothills of Thousand Oaks

Firefighters quickly stopped the forward progress of a brush fire Sunday afternoon after flames broke out in the foothills of Thousand Oaks and moved toward nearby neighborhoods.

The Kanan Fire was reported shortly before 2:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, near the North Ranch Open Space area. The fire moved south through vegetation, sending smoke over portions of the Conejo Valley and prompting a significant response from firefighters.

As crews worked to contain the blaze, firefighters positioned resources near Featherwood Street and Brunston Court to provide structure protection for nearby homes.

By approximately 3 p.m., firefighters had successfully stopped the fire's forward progress, preventing the flames from advancing farther toward residential areas.

Early reports indicated the fire was approximately 3 acres while firefighters and aircraft worked the incident. Evacuation warnings were also reportedly issued for several areas of Thousand Oaks during the response.

No cause for the fire had been announced as of Sunday afternoon, and the incident remained under investigation.

The Kanan Fire comes as Southern California experiences elevated temperatures during a summer heat wave, increasing concerns about dry vegetation and the potential for rapidly spreading brush fires.

Residents throughout the region are encouraged to remain alert during periods of hot and dry weather and to follow instructions from fire and emergency officials if a wildfire threatens their area.
