The Malibu High School girls soccer team are still undefeated in their preseason play. With two ties in their last two matches, the varsity girls now have a record of four wins and three ties. Leading the team on the field is senior Catherine Calvert, with 12 assists and one goal. From her holding center midfield role, Calvert has been able to take control in every game that the Sharks have played this year. She plays a strong defensive role by feeding the ball to her teammates, allowing them great scoring opportunities.

Injuries have once again hurt the Sharks this year. The roster of 19 dwindled down to 10 while playing in their last match against Viewpoint. Backup goalkeeper Becky Pieper did a great job shutting down the Viewpoint attack, while Brittany Saul scored the lone goal to give Malibu the draw.

Saul and freshmen Hanna Merhing are the team’s leading goal scorers with four a piece. Senior Eva Post is right behind them with three. Mehring has had a great debut season playing with Calvert in the midfield. She is a universal player that can play in the midfield or she can play up top and finish. Malibu has scored 24 goals in the seven games and allowed only 10 goals.

Senior Breana Cowart has played goalkeeper in all but a game and a half for Malibu. She has been outstanding, staying focused in every game. She has also earned one shutout so far. The Sharks defense has had to reshuffle several times so far this year due to complications. Senior Kitty Smith has played sweeper and helped anchor a strong defense.

The team hosted its Alumni Boxing Day game on Dec. 26. There was a big turnout with numerous talented alumni coming out to play. Sally Mills, Sally Smith, Megan Zweig, Sabrina Landworth, Kaliegh Schaefer and Brenna McGee came out and played. The game was open to all friends and family and everyone had a great time.

The next home games are Jan. 4 and 6 at 3:15 p.m.
