Theatricum Botanicum, the outdoor theater in Topanga Canyon, will open its summer season with Shakespeare’s “Othello.” This will be followed by performances of the bard’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” which lends itself so beautifully to the rustic setting.
“Othello” runs on Sundays at 3 p.m. from June 5 through Sept. 25. “Midsummer” opens on Saturday and continues every Saturday in June at 8 p.m. It will also play on Labor Day, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
James Avery, who has appeared in many roles at the Botanicum and will soon appear in the reprise version of “Applause,” will play the role of the tormented Moor. Jim LeFave will play the conniving ensign, Iago, and Willow Geer, representing the new generation of Geers, will be Desdemona.
Audiences this summer will have the rare opportunity of seeing “Fashion,” a comedy written in 1845 by Anna Cora Mowatt, one of America’s first women playwrights. This will run from July 2 to Oct. 2. Also playing in repertory this year will be Arthur Miller’s “The Ride Down Mt. Morgan,” scheduled for July 30 to
Oct. 8.
Prices are $25 for the upper tier and $15 for the lower tier. Playgoers are urged to dress casually and warmly and to bring cushions for bench seating. It is also advisable to call the theater at 310.455.3723 for exact dates and times. Picnickers are welcome before and after performances.
