Malibu youths ages 11 and up are invited to a series of “get acquainted” events hosted by Troop 85-a co-ed, outdoor adventure-focused scouting troop led by experienced parents. The troop focuses on monthly backpacking, kayaking, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, rocket building, launching and other outdoor adventures.
In recent years, Troop 85 members have reached the summit of Mt. Whitney, reveled in the views of Half Dome, rock climbed at Joshua Tree, trekked Death Valley, and enjoyed local outings such as kayaking around Santa Cruz Island and mountain biking on Mt. Pinos.
“We’re not like other troops, where one might be judged or looked down upon solely because of rank,” Malibu High School student Rasmus Bathum said in a press release. “Our troop is more based on personality-if you can get along with those around you-and less on trivial paperwork routines.” The troop welcomes mothers and other able-bodied family members on all outings.
Troop 85 kicks off its fall series of “get acquainted” events with its annual Open House on Nov. 10 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Methodist Church, 801 Via de la Paz, in Pacific Palisades. The open house will feature an indoor ropes course, hot chocolate tacos prepared on camp stoves, videos of trip highlights and more.
