A cozy eatery has stood firm near the intersection of Rambla Pacifico and PCH for decades. Like Malibu, it’s seen many changes over the years.

From Italian gourmet Georgio Baldi to continental cuisine at Terra and Lino’s trattoria, the quaint space next to the old Malibu Courthouse has been a tough sell over the years. Maybe it was the location, perhaps the ever-changing venue, but today, as Tavern One Grill and Tap house, it is doing just fine and locals and visitors are eating it up and asking for more.

Their award winning chili, succulent loaded burgers and prime rib sandwiches with tasty sides of confetti corn, creamy baked beans and crunchy French fries make a meal to remember.

Maybe this was just a poor location for a high-end restaurant; maybe Malibu was just craving a low-key place for good BBQ and good beer.

In addition to their massive menus of burgers and sandwiches, Tavern lets you take it up a notch with specialties like rib-eye steak, N.Y. strip (all natural aged Angus beef selected with oh-so-nice medium marbling) or a half of grassfed lemon chicken marinated and slow smoked, punctuated with a twist of zest.

For fish lovers, pull up a chair for Tavern fish tacos served with two warm corn tortillas, chipotle aioli, crispy cabbage and a great pico de gallo and it’s not only the same old mahi mahi — but you can get that too. You can also select from blackened Cajun salmon or beer-battered cod.

Veggie lovers have salads and wraps on the menu, including their signature chopped salad composed of locally grown baby greens, sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and grated cheddar cheese, topped with their very own BBQ ranch dressing and pico de gallo and a sprinkle of tortilla strips.

Despite a rocky road in restaurants past, Tavern is getting as effervescent as what’s going on behind the taps.

These days, you’ll find elbows bumper to bumper from lunch to happy hour to closing time. Tavern One Grill and Tap House manager Seth Haglund says he is very pleased with the way the place is progressing.

Or as he likes to sum it up, “Good people drink good beer.”

And eat well as well.
