On Sundaythe students and families of Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School will hold a yard sale to benefit the Nois Amis/Our Friends, Inc. Children Helping Poor and Homeless People (CHPHP).

The school has had a relationship with this organization for many years through the weekly collection of canned tuna also known as “Tuna Tuesday.” The idea for a yard sale emerged when the children at Point Dume became more aware of the growing homeless problem in Los Angeles and felt that they could help more than by only donating canned tuna. As reported in the L.A. Times, March 6 issue, there are more than 8,000 children who are homeless in Los Angeles.

Founded in 1987 by two children and their mother, Children Helping Poor and Homeless People (CHPHP) is a nationallyrecognized, educational outreach program conducted by children and teens with adult advisors. CHPHP volunteers participate in a variety of activities which help hungry, poor and homeJess children and adults. Among them are canned and packaged food drives, a hands-on food distribution program, an Adopt-A-Teen, Adopt-A-Child, Adopt-An-Adult program in which backpacks or travel bags are packed with new T-shirts and needed items, as well as year-round collecting of toiletries and other needed items. There is even an animal outreach program in which dog or cat food is donated and distributed to pets of people in need.

The children and their families are busy cleaning out their garages and rooms in preparation for a successful event. The yard sale should be large with many treasures to be found. The event will be held at Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School at 6955 Fernhill Drive on the playground. The gates will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
