PR and fertilizer

Perenchio’s golf course is polluting the Lagoon. Perenchio’s pollution was covered by most of the local TV channels (2, 4, 5 and 9) Friday, Aug. 29-midday, evening and nightly news broadcasts. While the Coastal Commission’s report states: “… for 2002 … approximately 838 pounds of 11 different insecticides, fungicides and herbicides were applied to the site, mostly to the 22,000 square foot putting green … 151 pounds of fertilizer over the last two and a half years. The as-built drainage system also allows the majority of surface runoff to flow across the site … and into two large drain inlets. The drain inlets tie into a drainpipe that discharges into the lagoon.” The Perenchio PR machine put out a statement: “The chemicals and fertilizer, in part, applied each year is less than the amount normally used on a typical lawn.” Why is the Pernechio PR machine trying to minimize the reality of this problem? It’s time to stop, shut down the golf course.
