Hooters banner a joke

Apparently a banner that read “Hooters Malibu Coming Soon,” which was hung on the fence surrounding the closed Chevron Station on Pacific Coast Highway at Malibu Road, was a practical joke.

City of Malibu Principal Planner Stefanie Edmonson said, “There’s no Hooters coming. We’re not quite sure why that banner was put up there but it’s my understanding that Hooters was called directly and a representative told a staff member that there’s no Hooters coming to Malibu. Also, the Realtor selling the site said that they didn’t put the sign up and doesn’t know who did.”

Commercial Realtor Tony Dorn confirmed the planner’s statement: “Hooters is not going into the Chevron station. Someone’s playing a practical joke. It’s Halloween.”

Step Forward Day celebrates service

Nine Malibu volunteer sites have been chosen as part of 75 worldwide locations for Pepperdine University’s 21st Annual Step Forward Day taking place Saturday.

An estimated 1,900 Pepperdine students, alumni, parents and friends will take part in the service projects that are scheduled in communities across the nation and world. In Malibu, the Pepperdine community will conduct nine service projects ranging from giving the Malibu Boys and Girls Club’s learning center a makeover to cleaning up Webster Elementary School’s gardens and overall campus.

What began as a single service project by two students in 1988 has grown to engage generations of alumni, parents and friends spanning the globe.

Malibu is where Step Forward Day began when two students recognized the need for volunteers in the local community and wanted to share their passion for service with their peers. The projects began as small acts of service from helping with repairs on homes of local senior citizens to planting gardens at Webster Elementary.

Now, 21 years later, the reach of Step Forward Day has grown to include work with more than 50 organizations spanning from Ventura County to Downtown Los Angeles and alumni chapters across the nation and world, including Tokyo.

Malibu Step Forward Day sites this year include all three elementary schools, Malibu High School, Boys & Girls Club of Malibu, Camp Kilpatrick, Papa Jack’s Skate Park, Vital Zuman Farms and Malibu Methodist Nursery School. A full listing of Step Forward Day projects and times can be obtained online at www.pepperdine.edu/alumni/chapters/stepforward.

Brawl breaks out at local juvenile detention center

A racially charged fight among two-dozen juvenile inmates at Camp Kilpatrick detention center in Malibu broke out during the weekend. Authorities used pepper spray to help end the fight.

The fight began with name-calling between a black and Hispanic youths in the camp’s dormitory about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, said L.A. County Chief Probation Officer Robert Taylor. The brawl lasted about an hour, and two staff members and several inmates suffered minor injuries.

Twenty-three inmates were removed from the camp and housed at two other facilities, and one of the housing units sustained minor damage, Taylor said. “We’ll be looking into the causes of this,” he said.

Many of Camp Kilpatrick’s youth are known for their performances in the improv group Locked up in Malibu, performing skits, poetry, songs and “talk-story”-made up at the moment-but with a twist. Local resident Suzie Duff founded the group 10 years ago, and was honored with a Dolphin Award in 2008 for her work with the juveniles at Camp Kilpatrick and Camp Gonzalez.

Camp Kilpatrick was also the setting of “The Gridiron Gang,” a 2006 film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a true story of one staffer’s trials in organizing a cohesive team of disciplined players out of former gang members and other social outcasts.
