Here, there, and everywhere: Malibu's business boom continues

Malibu’s commercial sector is popping with new businesses launching

As the summer tourist season marches on, several new storefronts and establishments have opened or are opening soon throughout town, and in one retail center, some vacating businesses have opened the door for long-established businesses to relocate within the Country Mart.

Trading places and new faces — Malibu Country Mart’s changing layout

Malibu Country Mart is undergoing quite a bit of change, including some long-standing tenants who have relocated to premium spaces that were vacated by closing businesses. The New West, which had been near Nati’s, has relocated to a lawn-adjacent location across from John Vavartos in the breezeway.

M. Frederick has taken over the premium spot vacated by The Malibu Colony next to Tra Di Noi Restaurant and is giving visitors a double take.

“M. Frederick is delighted to open our new spacious venue, but we are also keeping our old original location over in the building by Taverna Tony’s,” said Manager Tara Stern. “The location by Tony’s is now our surplus store and everything is 50 percent off — we invite customers to come see us at both locations.”

The new M. Frederick location is open from 10 to 6 Mondays through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday andthe surplus location keeps the same hours with one important qualifier: it is closed on Wednesdays, Stern informed.

Popular contemporary streetwear boutique Cherry Malibu has opened a new location in the Country Mart at Suite 13. The brand features retro-Americana-inspired clothing and has released collections like the “MICRO-DOSE” Drop 3 series shot at the beautiful Getty Villa. The styles blend modern California-style and workwear aesthetics, and often feature patterned slacks and text-driven jackets. The label also produces editorial content through Cherry the Geek TV, covering pop culture and entertainment.

New establishments that are forthcoming in the Country Mart

Gentlemen looking for the coveted Japanese selvedge denim and tough-knit tees will need go no further than the Malibu Country Mart when Buck Mason opens its venue in a few months. The establishment will replace Madison Boutique nextto Faherty. Owned by co-founders Erik Allen Ford and Sasha Koehn, the brand launched in 2013 in a 350-square-foot garage in Venice and has burgeoned to 30 stores. The brand features both men's and women's wear and creates its proprietary fabrics from scratch, and is made in America.

Temporarily on Leave, a sustainable, handmade travel bag brand rooted in exploration will soon be relocating from Surf Canyon to Space 14 of the Country Mart and the popular company’s disciples are sure to follow along. More to follow on that new establishment, according to proprietor Dustin Coury.

Cross Creek Ranch adds some new brands

Malibu’s newest retail center continues to add to its suite of offerings, most recently opening The Shop by Wheat, a multi-brand curation designed with various destinations in mind. The concept: to bring together world-renowned brands alongside a group of carefully selected emerging brands. Each destination collection includes curated items for women, men, and children, and shoppers on the go can find some fun little gifts to keep the littles busy when dining or at the beach. A beautiful selection of jewelry is also on show.

The Shop by Wheat is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.

New establishments coming soon at Cross Creek Ranch include Birkenstock, Chitchat Coffee + Matcha, Malbon, a lifestyle brand revolutionizing golf by weaving the energy of fashion, music, and art with golf apparel incorporating bold designs and collaborations. RH, a curator of design, taste, and style in the luxury lifestyle market, offering timeless home furnishings collections will soon grace the grounds of the Ranch. What Goes Around Comes Around, a pre-loved luxury and vintage will also be joining the Ranch’s campus. WGACA offers rare handbags, jewelry, ready-to-wear, and more from top fashion houses, including Hermes, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci. Finally, Malibu’s own Gigi Hadid, a graduate of Malibu High School, will share her lifelong love of cashmere when she opens Guest in Residence, an American knitwear brand Hadid opened in New York in 2022. The brand’s mission: To honor past heirlooms and give life to new ones spanning generations.

'Wellness with Some Hell Yes!'

“One week until Malibu Moves together! Movement is better when we do it together!” declared a July 11 email sent to all who are anxiously awaiting for FS8 Malibu Reformer Pilates Studio to open. FS8 Malibu is the newest franchise location of the FS* global fitness chain, according to Dania Bahrami. “July 18 is the big day when we open! Let’s move! Connect! & Give back!”

“Sure, we’ll be working out — but what we’re really hoping to create is something that lasts long after the workout ends!” The message continued. “A place where familiar faces become friends and where we encourage one another, where everyone feels welcome, whether it’s their first workout or their hundredth — that’s what we want FS8 Malibu to be!”

The community is invited to join in the opening festivities on the morning of July 18. “Join us for a fun morning featuring an energizing FS8-inspired workout, wellness goodies from Good Quality Human, fresh treats from the Vitamin Barn andgiveaways! It’s a wonderful chance to meet your future fitness community!”

FS8 blends the best of Reformer Pilates, Tone, and Yoga into one dynamic, low-impact workout designed to improve strength, flexibility, core stability, mobility, mental clarity, and overall well-being, according to the talented team opening the studio, whose postings on social media added, “We’ve created the ultimate low-impact, high-sweat workout that builds strength, stability, and mobility — we’re so excited to flow with you soon!”

The studio’s concept involves a dynamic 50-minute workout designed around eight core elements of fitness, utilizingscreens for visual instruction alongside in-person trainers.

Readers can visit FS8 Malibu at 24903 Pacific Coast Highway. Bahrami noted that the space where the new pilates studio in the Compass Building once hosted the community closet, organized by local volunteers to support families affected by the Palisades Fire.

“We are so excited to announce that we are bringing FS8 Malibu to the same space,” Bahrami said. “It is such a full-circle moment — we created such an amazing community space after the fires — the energy was so healing! We are looking forward to continuing spreading that positive energy with the community.”
