Our Legacy Park is unique to Malibu. Where else can one walk through a quiet, peaceful natural park at a town’s center? Why transform Legacy to a “conventional” park when two such parks already exist: Malibu Bluffs and Trancas Canyon, with the former just 30 seconds up PCH from Legacy?
If it weren’t for our community’s collective voice, and very generous donors and supporters, the Legacy Park property would, more than likely, have morphed into a “Legacy” resort hotel or a “Legacy” commercial complex with the image of a community park a rapidly fading pipe-dream. How quickly one forgets just how close we were to not acquiring this much sought-after land.
Denise and I love to take leisurely strolls along the paths at Legacy Park, to see and hear myriad songbirds, hummingbirds, ducks and herons. For those who enjoy sports, play ball at Bluffs Park, on teams with names like the Malibu Songbirds, Hummingbirds, Ducks and Herons.
It is so refreshing to gaze at Legacy’s pond and, concomitantly, view nature’s beauty reflecting off its still surface. The native plant life also paints a calming scene, while its leaves gently rustle in a mild zephyr breeze, free of humanity’s din.
And, of course, it’s also a joy to spend time at Bluffs, with its well-manicured lawns, multi-sports facilities, picnic areas, the Michael Landon Community Center, summer movies, toddler play areas, etc. At Bluffs, one can lie in the grass, picnic, toss frisbees, see the kids play ball, view the whales, gaze with awe along the coastline and the ocean below, catch a beautiful sunset or moonrise, or simply take a stroll around its perimeter with one’s doggies.
We’re so fortunate to have such choices in our small community! Diversity is the spice of life, which also applies to the Bluffs-Legacy duality.
