The leaves are falling and that means the curtain is calling. Geffen theater buffs including Sir Elton John, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson can get their fill of thespian delights.
The Geffen Playhouse kicks off the new season with “The Cake,” directed by Jennifer Chambers and starring Morrison Keddie as George, Shannon Lucio as Jen, Rod McLachlan as Tim, Carolyn Ratteray as Macy and Debra Jo Rupp as Della.
Inspired by a real life story, it begins when a North Carolina baker and devout Christian is asked to whip up a special wedding cake for a friend’s daughter. She is thrilled but her joy is short lived when she learns she learns the intended is another bride and realizes she is faced with an agonizing choice between faith and family.
“The Cake” runs from Sept. 10 to Oct. 21 at the Geffen’s intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater.
Up next, it’s two one-act plays: “Hughie,” written by Eugene O’Neill, and “Krapp’s Last Tape,” written by Samuel Beckett. Both are directed by Steven Robman and feature two-time Tony Award winner Brian Dennehy.
In 2019, the Geffen hosts two world premieres. “Black Super Hero Magic Mama” takes us into spring before the season wraps up with “Invisible Tango.”
Remember the Geffen’s smaller theater is a cozy intimate place and good seats go early.
SO, WHAT WAS YOUR VACATION DESTINATION?
There were mega yachts on the French Riviera, royal weddings and top tennis championships this summer. So, how did our A-listers spend their time? For many it was a hop, skip and a jump overseas.
Pierce Brosnan could be found center court at Wimbeldon, where the UK’s latest “it” girls Kate and Meghan also took in a smashing match. He was accompanied by longtime love Keely Shaye Smith and 21-year old son Dylan. Both gents looked jolly good in sharp lightweight suits while Keely was fresh as an English Rose and was pretty in pink. George and Amal were at an even bigger regal bash forgoing their racquets to join the parade of fascinators and feathers and golden rope at Prince Harry’s royal wedding.
And where in the world was Leo? Just about everywhere, it seemed. After shooting scenes for his new flick “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” with Brad Pitt, the 43-year-old Oscar winner jetted to St. Tropez with his gal pal Camila Morrone. Camilia’s mom Sola also joined the fun at sea.
Billionaire Larry Ellison stayed at home. His yachts were seen numerous times in local waters where he was presumably checking in on his multiple properties on Carbon Beach. Ships ahoy!
